My thoughts on the NBA, Lakers chances

(i bet for some of you this makes you mad)

dear regular season basketball fans,

there are reasons why there has only been really 3.25 relevant teams in the past 10 years when it comes to playoff time. the lakers, Spurs, Boston, and the heat. miami is .25 because they havent been competitors since that one championship season. lol. When it comes down to the playoffs, its the best "TEAM" in a "7 game series." All these teams had a couple things in common that were specifically built for the playoffs. not the regular season. we are talking playoffs now. first it starts with the coach. in a 7 game series a coaches game plan is solid and can always make adjustments when necessary. after a loss all the great coaches made great adjustments. second is the need for a team with the right elements to carry on the game plan and be able to adjust to the changes the leader gives them. make right decisions. also 7 games is so short yet so long to be banging with the best of them. lastly, you got to be able to play against anything including the refs when they arent on youre side because its bound to happen.

now ask yourself some questions about your team. can your team adjust when need be and not panic in a time of distress? if so how long is that recovery time? its only 7 seven games. do you really think your coach can out coach the hall of fame caliber coaches that are still in the league? does your team have the right role players and x factors to come through when the stars cant do everything? the questions can go on forever that would eventually dig up your doubt.

the only team that is outside the 3 relevant teams in the past ten years (i rounded down because miami has been pathetic since that one championship year) is chicago. they have all the right pieces to start a new dynasty. coach and team. thibodeau is going to be a hall of fame coach one day. and D Rose is obviously a beast and the team surrounding him all know their roles.

those are my thoughts on basketball as a TRUE fan of basketball, not because im a pretend jump on the bandwagon when a team is good basketball follower.

so in conclusion, the lakers are ok (with or without bynum) in my eyes and still have better odds than most the teams out there.

its a 50/50 chance i FEEL like not doing what I need to do

but i still do it because i KNOW the possibilities

ace gallery has become one of my favorite places in the world.
its at the top of the list close to being in the waters of hawaii,
eating paella on the beaches of barcelona,
being on safaris in kenya mazungo rhino watching (inside joke that brings back memories),
and being in the falling snow of whistler.

today after work i went an hour before they closed.
walked the many empty hallways and rooms
as i was the only one that seemed to be there.
headphones on listening to some kanye, l'roneous, and
old beats that brought back memories of fun times.
gazing at the works of john mellei and datefarmers.
the simple equation that equaled to me reminiscing
and thinking about my future at the same time.
its was peaceful.
and to say it plain and simple
it felt right.
and it reminded me why i came back to LA.

i am hesitant to take pictures of the artwork nowadays and post them
because as i have learned from my gallery visits here in LA,
you do not the half until you see it in person.
the texture color brush strokes.
the intention in size medium and technique
the vision in setup of installation.
all that in purposeful support of their concept for their show.
not just some haphazard show randomly put together.
i have seen artwork that i thought was great from pictures or videos online,
only to be disappointed in person.
and been to shows that i thought was nothing from pictures,
but ended up being some of the best shows ive ever seen.
in result ive learned the deceptive nature of internet promotion.
dressing up artwork in pictures to make it look better than it is.
hyping of things for marketing or promotion.
it sort of makes me sick now.

well all i can say is that
try to see youre so called "favorite artist's" work
in person and see how it compares to the
hyped up expectation you put into youre
head when judging it by your research done
on the internet.

it may change.
and it may not.
just try it.

it makes your day a lot better.

truck drivers arent the friendliest people on the road.

canvas bar making in the woodshop.
not the easiest thing in the world but well worth it when youre done and accomplished.

5 feet x 5 feet. its a great feeling that i can control the size of my canvas whenever i want.

i am a tropical person.
today was rainy and super cold, especially in the wood shop.
which brings me to my next one...

family dinners at restaurants are the best because you dont have to clean
up after yourself. you pay other people to do it for you.

last weekend i got the chance to see the
opening of my favorite duo, herakut.
this is exactly what i came to LA for.
the quality and level of art is just insane.

as soon as i walked in i was mesmerized.
so mesmerized i didnt take a picture of everything
because i was gawking and drooling over all the pieces.
and not to mention hera herself. ha.
the pieces are even ten times as beautiful in person.

my cousin and i had the chance to talk to hera
and she is absolutely amazing.
you can tell shes undoubtedly in love with art
and it consumes her.

the one thing that stuck with me that she was talking about
are all the dirty random lines inside the characters
that look unfinished yet geniusly unfinished.
she said that those lines are her trying to find her way around
the painting and who says that she has to cover it up.
when she was in art school she would always try to make
things perfect but now why should she do that
if shes not. (i think she is. ha)

its inspiring to meet artist actually in love with art.
not caught up in stupid things because
they have something more important to do.

although i miss hawaii.
im glad im here because
being surround by this much art all the time
is inspiring.

ive been opened up to whole new type of art world
and a whole new perspective on it.
ive decided that i want to be as multi-dimensional
as i can.

these drawings on 18"x24" are a reflection of that.
these are continuous one line drawings.
so the the have a starting point and an ending point.
i call them my doodles because up close
they look like simple scribbles up close but
when you step back they look like fully rendered drawings.

its funny everyone whose seen my latest stuff said that it has a polynesian cultural feel to it.

I finally updated my website. I made it a lot more simple and clean as I think an artists website should be with the artwork speaking for itself. I'm going to be updated it with new artwork on the front page every week. I got a lot of new material and progression to show those who are interested. Ive been spreading myself out lately. i usually do figures, more specifically women, but lately ive been painting stylized landscapes, exploring studies of culture, experimental one line drawing and more.

its funny my dad said, " youve only been in school for 2 weeks and your art is already getting way better. maybe you should just quit school and become an famous artist already."

I know he didnt really mean that because he know my goal is to teach college level art one day and i need school to do so.

so if youre even remotely interested in my art, youre in for a treat.

i put this up cause i think this girl is strikingly beautiful. whoever she is. hahahaha.

yesterday in class we had a discussion about beauty.

what is beauty?

so called "scholars" try to break down everything and put them into categories. the topic with beauty
is no different. putting things into categories isnt always the best thing because when you start to categorize
things come prejudices, stereotypes, etc. but a benefit to to labeling something is now we can have conversation
about it. for example, when someone refers to me they can say, "you know phil? the filipino artist guy?" filipino
and artist are both labels. labels that can be looked at in a negative or positive way.

well now back to beauty. lets put this in the so called "art world" and aesthetic terms.
there are too different types of way to describe art.

BEAUTY-pleasure, head turning, bounded/limited, something you dont have to think about, superficial
SUBLIME-pleasure/fear, something to think about, unbounded/limitless, deep/reason

the best examples i can give of the way they are categorized in the world of "aesthetics" is when you see
amazingly attractive model for the fist time walking down the street and she turns your head because shes
so beautiful. that is beauty. you know nothing about her. youve never
had a conversation with her. you dont know her bad habits. but she is just plain beautiful.

on the other hand, imagine meeting a girl who you thought was cute. but you started to get to know her and started
to get a deeper connection. you eventually learn you cant live without this girl she is so amazing. you have reason to like her because you know her good/bad traits and you possibly went through pain to see it. so its reason other than visual liking.

the question now is, what is it that we long for? beauty or sublime?
do we like the the warhols? or do we like pollocks?

in my opinion, as a society we are brought up to lean toward the beauty side, though on the inside we yearn for the feeling
of the sublime.

do you like art that just looks beautiful and eye pleasing?
or do you like art that has reason behind it?
do you like someone like angry woebots who paints/draws pandas for a living?

angry woebots.

or do you like someone like herbert baglione who constantly looks for tension and social commentary in his work?

herbert baglione.

so would like pandas in hanging in your living room? or a girl in water with her pussy hanging out dreaming of God knows what with something that looks like herpes on her hand/arm?

dont get me wrong.
im not saying one is better than the other.
angry woebots and herbert baglione are both great artists in their own right.
im just asking what do you prefer?
because we all have preference.

when it comes down to it, i think about my own art. why am i not ever satisfied with my own art? i used to think
it was technique. i always had to chase the technique. if i didnt have that then i would never be satisfied with my
own art. i was chasing "beauty." im rethinking this and maybe its not my technique that needs to be improved
because i see my progression as i practice more. but maybe it my subject matter that im not satisfied with. maybe
i need more tension. maybe i need more reason. maybe i need to be chasing the "sublime."

who knows? well i guess i just have to find it out. i have a feeling my art will turn into something else now. its funny
because ive had this conversation with many people before that my art always changes. i guess its the nature of the
search.

dear hawaii,

as i write this letter to you i think of all the feelings i want to put into description but am held by the inadequate words that i can describe them with. im not a man of many spoken words. so a part of me wants to use big ones to make this sound deeper than it really is, but then i remember the naturalness of the simplicity you've taught me and how amazing it feels. when i first came to you, i would have never thought you would have taught me so much. i never thought i would learn so much, do so much, love so much, feel so much, see so much, and just be so much. somehow my plan to stay with you for a year turned into 3. and within those 3 wonderful years i hiked your highest peaks, been to your most beautiful beautiful beaches, ate some of your best food, had some of the crazeiest nights of my life, had some of the best intimacy in my life, fallen in love with art again, and most importantly for me made some friends for life.

hawaii, ive fallen in love with the complexity of your thought, the authenticity of your hospitality, the strength of your tradition, the simplicity of your living, and the beauty of your naturalness. all of this amazingly encompassed into one word you've made internationally known , "aloha." your aloha has captivated me. no one really knows what aloha really means, until they are willing to sit down with you and know you. i mean it took me 3 years beautiful years to do so and it will never leave me. i love it. to give you the brutal truth, the only 2 things that could separate you and i are ones that i want more than anything in life. 1.) to satisfy my thirst as an artist and show the world what God has gifted me. and 2.) to one day have a loving faithful wife and kids (hopefully 5 so i can coach a starting basketball team. lol). as i diligently search for both and embark into a different chapter in my life, trust me when i say, i love you and will never forget you or any of the things you've taught me. one day we shall be together again. i promise. as for now i will represent everything you embody to the best of my abilities as i go out into the world.

1. had a blast on a spontaneous maui trip with the boys and gooses nieces.
2. glad i got to visit my nana before i leave the islands.
3. this 1000 piece mc escher puzzle is getting to me.

4. im getting dark as hell from surfing quite often.
5. cant wait to go to brooklyn...but am going to be heart broken when i leave hawaii.
6. 24 days 15 hours 1 minute and counting.
7. i was asked to be a groomsman in another wedding. always a groomsman, never a groom. lol.
8. i live life quitely, looking for adventure, constantly talking to God in my head, weaving in and out of peoples lives
hoping i can make a mark. its lonely at times but its the life i chose and i still have hope that someone will join me one day.

but last night while listening to tahiti rey do her amazing cover of this song
i heard a lyric that i had heard before, that hit me in a different way.
its funny how you can walk a path a 1000 times
but find something different everytime if youre open minded enough.

after listening to it and i just started thinking of people

and found the same common trait of being in love with the world
through some form of trade.

but finally got over that hump
by opening my eyes to what i have.

right now im sitting in jeffs and thanhs living room where ive been staying for almost a week now. listening to jaga jazzist, "a living hush." and its the perfect sounds for me to be listening to right now. i know its been awhile since i last blogged. my parents even called me asking if everything was ok. yes everything is ok. within the past month i guess this is whats my mind and whats going on.

1. i rekindled my love for walking through grocery isles.
2. learned that not only am i color blind, but i maybe tone def. dont i qualify for handicap parking for that?
3. ive set a goal to become an internationally known artist by 3 years. its a tough goal but hey, sometimes you got to race.
4. another goal ive set is that i will travel to least 6 different countries within the next 5 years. hopefully two of which will be kenya and egypt next summer.
5. after 10 years of being a full time artist i want to teach college level drawing and/or painting.
6. an amazing person has parted my life at the same time another has entered. i wish it didnt have to be that way.
7. i will be a california resident once again in about 1 1/2 months but not before visiting a friend in new york.
8. one thing i will definitely miss is being tanned once i move.
9. ive been a homebody since ive been staying here at jeff and thanhs house. thinking painting reading facebooking.
10. im yearning to learn about something new.
11. theres nothing like hawaii water and sun.
12. i finally learned what the hell "glassy" means in surfing terms. ha.
13. the most amazing people are those who can do anything and/or nothing and still enjoy their company. my future wife will definitely have to have that trait.
14. i love comfortable silence.

there comes those times in life where you just know your cue.
when its time to exit stage left and enter a new one.
certain things fall into the right place at the right time.
the place that you are in, starts to give you such a familiar feeling.
and the people around you start giving off vibes that we have already said
goodbye by pure body language before the time has even come to leave.

you start to reminisce of this place, of when it was so foreign to you that
it brought out those invisible insecurities that you fail to recognize
from the last bubble you lived in.
to where time passes and later calling this same place your home,
your safe haven, and you know nothing else but this.

the people youve connected with start finding their way.

by the mere task of being their friend.
it makes you proud to have been part of their journey
but the time comes when you start to wonder
how they would be without you.
and its not that they are better off without you.
but you want to know that your friendship with them
forever changed their life and you would like to know
if they learned anything from its delicate yet unbreakable bond.
by the absence of your person but the presence of your being remains.

some of us are meant to stay just right where we are.
and some of us are meant for that brief breathe of time
to be in the place where we lay our heads.

it doesnt mean that these two different types of us...
wont cross paths and make friends for life.
sometimes those are the strongest bonds.
the brief ones.

im starting to believe that you shouldnt
settle in a place where you arent needed.
but just because you arent needed it doesnt mean
that you arent loved and wanted.
when you start wanting someones love
we forget the needs of our own person.
so for now ill enjoy weaving in and out.
introducing my self.
slowly revealing myself.
seeing if this is the place i belong in
or the people/person i belong to.

transitions are hard.
even now as i think of it
it gives me a certain empty feeling.
but transitions are necessary for growth.
and if youve got your priorities right
growth is at the top of you list.

(just random thoughts..it may or may not make sense
but just think of this as a stream of consciousness
of how im feeling right now. i just wanted to get it down
in words. sometimes its nice to see your thoughts on paper.)

so while preparing at the gallery for last weekends show, a random guy walks in and asks if can browse around. of course being in hawaii, over here the aloha spirit welcomes everyone. he starts talking about this project he has been doing for over a year now. this guy is :/ aka jack of the flickr world and his project is called "i got wood."

its probably one of the most amazing projects ive seen. he makes these little wood puzzle pieces and has street artist from all over the world paint each little piece.

he has artist from all over the world...

and its great because it seems knows a every story from every artist that has done one from these far away places...

he gave me a piece a to do because this project is something i would love to be a part of.
and one day ill post it on the blog and send it back to him, :/ aka jack.

i know it shouldnt matter.
but peoples opinion matter a lot to me.
its not that i want to be the most famous or richest
artist in the world with the best technic.
to be honest doing all this art has me in the
hole financially.
also im not a spotlight type person.
when i walk into a room full of artist here
in hawaii none of them really know who i am.
and really all that stuff doesnt matter to me.
when i say i care about peoples opinion
im saying i care what people take from the art i share with them.
ive been getting a lot of comments lately
saying "youve inspired me to (insert here)...."
or "your work emits so much positive energy"
or "your work has soul."
those are the kinds of responses i love
because in the end i do this for the people.
this piece is actually about community.

sometimes life just throws things right in your lap and you just have to take advantage. i was contacted by a guy named nick welles, who is the owner of a gallery in haleiwa (north shore), hawaii. he wanted me to be apart of a show he was having. when he told me "creative freedom" i knew i was already in. he asked if knew anyone else who would fit the show and i instantly thought of my friends, eukarezt and rzone.

the past few days have been very tiring. work til 6. drive out to the north shore and do an installation til about 3 or 4 in the morning. all the while sucking in fumes ( i just bought a respirator because ive learned my lesson) being fatigued, and driving home late night and doing it all over again.ive been very blessed to spend these days with 2 amazing people and not to mention amazing artist, eukarezt and rzone. euk is a friend and a inspiration to me because of how hard he works at his art and how passionate is about it. and if you read my blog, rzone always has a special place in my heart as an artist to work with and a friend to be around.

im excited about this show coming up on saturday.
the other artist in the show are killing it too.

when life throws things things at you you just have to
take it in and absorb it.

its a new year.

ive worked with nikki at diverse arts center
on shows doing live art for the past couple months.
diverse arts is a center geared to kids but generally
open for anyone wanting to practice or learn a new craft.
i heard about an opening for an urban arts teacher
so i gave nikki a ring and guess what...
i got it and im very excited for this new opportunity.

my friend shaun is teaching the tuesday class and
im teaching the thursday class.

here are pictures from the first 2 days of class.

of me when i was younger.

when i first moved here to hawaii.
it just seemed so tropical.

one thing i remembered was the birds.
every morning there would be so many

so loud in fact once i was awake from it
i could never go back to sleep.
i was never used to that back home in Pomona.
all i could hear outside was the sound of
cars on the freeway passing by.
its been 2 1/2 years now since
the hawaii thing happened.
and this morning i just noticed the birds again.
how could of i not notice the birds
outside of my window pane for the past 2 years?
ill probably be thinking about it all day now.
its weird how when you get so used to something
its value, not necessarily diminishes, but
really is pushed to the side.

ive been in hawaii over two years now and loving. the one thing that i often miss is my family. ever since i moved here i happened to miss mateos 1st and 2nd birthdays because of bad timing. this year i wasnt going to miss it for the world. so after my short visit to cali i headed for portland, oregon.

So I dropped my laptop on a hard concrete floor. Broken hard drive x no backup = :( Phil. Oh well at least I have my health. Life is too beautiful to worry about material possesions. Since that has unfortunately happened I am currently blogging from my iPhone. (yes, there is an app for that and it gives me no excuse at all now to not blog.)

i love it when i come across quotes by people whose work i admire and i can relate to.
because i find this to be true of myself.
im an outsider that watches from the outskirts.
as people come and go in my life.
a lonely dreamer who lets his imagination runs wild in his head.
but in reality im just quiet and keep to myself.
because ive become addicted to the feeling of being safe
and staying within my own comfort zone.
people have all these assumptions of who i am
but they really dont know.
ive said this before but ive realized that
my emotion may not match my expression.
not many people stick around long enough to get past
my quiet, mellow, and monochromatic self
to dig into my mind.
but maybe its meant to be that way.

JR is a photographer that i discovered a couple years ago.
and is probably my favorite artist of this day.
not because he has skills with his photography but
because of what he does with his art.

most artist, especially in the graffiti world,
are so talented but so yet full of themselves.

yet dont really try to make a difference
when it comes to social awareness.
plus i gimmicky art gets old fast.
skills only take you so far in my eyes.

one thing about me is that i always need change.
doing art is no different.
once i get into something, like a certain style
i always want to change because i just get bored
if i do the same thing all the time.

i went from black and white painting
to full on rendering of coloring
(which i havent shown really anyone
the 13+ painting i have in my room
that i hope to include in an installation show
one day.)
doing these complicated patterns that
take much time.
i started to think what could i do that would be
the exact opposite of what ive been doing
but still kinda relates to me as an artist.
i guess thats just the way i am.

thus born these drawings.
line art in its simplest form.

i dont know why but these drawings
make me so happy when i do then.
i guess its the fact that its totally the opposite direction
of what ive been doing.
im not leaving what i do.
but i just like the fact im doing something else.
artist tend to get caught up in the same thing all the time.
and thats something i just cant do.

plus simplicity often speaks more to me.

ive never really committed to anything in my life
because its hard to keep my interest in things.
usually im over something pretty quick.
i go hard for a certain amount of time
then i just get tired of it.
not because i just cant do it anymore
its just because i simply lose interest.
thats why black and white line art
is like therapy to me.
one of the only things that keeps my interest.
for me to focus on such a thing so detailed is
actually pretty amazing
for my flighty/fickle personality.

1. simplicity is a term too complex for complex people to comprehend.
2. life isnt about doing the most before i die to feel alive, its about finding something that makes the most out me to feel alive.
3. often we are attracted most to people who we are nothing like but somehow in our mind want to be like. in the end, we find out in the process of finding out who they are, we forgot who we really are.
4. growth isnt always about change. most of the time its about confirming the person who we are and have ignored for the sake of things that dont matter in the end.
5. no matter how much talent you have, if you dont nurture what you got it wont bring you anywhere.
6. go for it, whatever it is and means to you.
7. sometimes i wonder why i ignore whats there for me, in front of me...yes im one of those types of people. im working on it.
8. i love hawaii.

last night was a good night and had a lot of first.
i did an event for diverse arts, a private school which encourages growing creativity and confidence. especially amongst kids. there was art, bboys, video games and a pretty good amount of people.
i was encourage to see how much youth was in there with their expression
through whatever outlet they chose.

there was a first for me.

well not a first because i remember when i used to do pieces of "hip hop" on my bag my freshman year of high school.
but yea it has been that long.

but the highlight of my night was this...when the bboy battling came on everyone seemed to gravitate toward that.
a kid stood next to me and just watched over my shoulder.

do a painting from scratch the night before a show.

wish me luck on the live painting tonight.
from what i know what we are painting on and with
should be pretty interesting.

when i first moved to hawaii i had very few friends.
i couldnt appreciate hawaii and i wanted to actually move home from this paradise.
i started to figure out that i couldnt appreciate anything because i had no one to share my joy of hawaii with.
mike and vanessa were two of the first people to take me in.
mike is like a brother to me.
so vanessa is like a sister in law.
i always have a blast when im with their crazy behinds.
i havent hung out with them both in awhile.
mikes birthday just past so it was about that time.

we used to always go to this spot called rum fire.
good times as is it always is.

craziest couple ive ever met but i love them.

she has a pretty dope acoustic album out
i listen too quite often.

the best edamame ever.

we then went walk around the shops....

mike acting crazy like usual.

and im a true believer of that.
